Clerk of the Courso : Mr T. A. Brown. Handicapper: The Committee (exclusive of horse owners).— War. Percival, Hon. Sec.
The summer carnival of the Auckland Racing Club was inaugurated yesterday j (Boxing Day) at Ellerslie, and attracted one of the largest attendances that has has ever graced our pretty racecourse. The weather was pre - eminently sportsmen's weather— a fine, warm, dry day, with just a sufficiency of wind to prevent tho genial warmth degenerating into sultriness. The old grand stand was packed, and the number of ladies present, and the elegance of their costumes, was a subject of remark amongst Southern and Australian visitors. One Melbourne gentleman was heard to say that in this respect the display was comparatively finer than could be seen at Flemington itself. The spacious lawn was for the nonce converted into a garden, numerous flowering potted plants being tastefully arranged about the sward. The shade of a cool awning at one end of the lawn was much patronised by the ladies during the intervals between the races, when Impey's band contributed their quota to the day's enjoyment. The grand stand | luncheon was supplied by Messrs McEwin and Dallen, and leit nothing to be desired. | The railway arrangements were in many respects better than usual, and the 7,000 persons who visited the course yesterday had little occasion to grunible against the much-grumbled-at railway department for delays, &c. There is one matter, however, which we think requires reference to. Owing to some new regulation issued under the authority of the Secretary to the Department, the railway people yesterday refused to issue train tickets only to racecourse platform, insisting that the train and course ticket should be taken. As a consequence, many who objected to paying; for admission when they already had admission tickets were compolled to go on to Ellerslie and walk back to the course. This seems a very senseless arrangement, and Aye trust that an alteration will at once be made, There was a larger number of Southern visitors on the course than we have ever seen before. Amongst them may bo mentioned Mr G. G. Stead, of Christchurch, Mr Pilbrow, Mr Donne, Mr T. J. Walker (" Mazeppa "), Mr J. Chaclwick ("Spectator "), and all the leading members of the Southern betting ring. The exPremier, the Hon. F. Whitaker, was amongst those on the stand, and the Hon. the Minister of Public works — always a keen sportsman — occupied a place on the stewards' stand during the day. The totalisators, Avhich were worked by the Club, were extremely well patronised, no less than £1,717 being in the machine on the Cup, and the total amount which passed through being about £6,000. There was little in the racing calling for comment. Salvage's dual win was very popular, the horse proving a good thing for the public, as in both his races he started a hot favourite. The victory of Trenton in the Midsummer Stakes shows that the game little Musket's win in the Welcome Stakes at the Spring Meeting was no fluke, as many supposed. Ugly Buck, who received the unanimous support of the clever Southern party, thoroughly disgraced himself. Wo cannot conclude this introductory notice without complimenting Mr McLaughlin on his success with the starter's flag. Owing to the absence of Mr Marks through illness, Mr J: Waymouth acted as clerk of the scales. The first event, which started at one o'clock, was the Maiden Plate, of lOOsovs., with a sweepstakes of 3sovs. each, to go to second horse. For 8-year-olds and upwards. Weight for age. Distance, lj mile. Mr W. Bobbett's b c Musketeer, by Musket— Yatterina, 3yrs, 7st 121b (Sutherland) 1 Mr D. McKinnon's b h Strathearn, 6yrs, 9st 41b (Wattie) 2 Mr Atherton's eh c Flageolet, 3yrs, 7st 121b(Laing) 3 Mr Thompson's br q AB, 3yrs, 7st 91b, also started. The betting was 4 to 1 on Musketeer, 5 to 1 against the others. Flageolet led at the start, and passed the stand still leading, closely followed by Musketeer, hard held. At the mile post the colt took the first place, and immediately after the heavily-weighted Strathearn passed Flageolet also. Musketeer eventually won by a length with plenty in hand. Totalisator dividend, £1 6s. Time, 2min. 52secs. The Midsummer Stakes of 200 soys., with a sweepstakes of 5 soys. each, to go to second horse. For 2-year-olds; colts, Bst J 01b; fillies, | Bst 51b. Distance, 6 furlongs. 1 Mr W. Sommerville's b c Trenton, by Musket— Frailty, Sst 101b (Wattie) ... 1 Mr Roberton's b c Krupp, by MusketMaid of Athol, Sst 101b (T. Clark) ... 2 Mr J. Balmain's eh f Gretna Green, by ' Bolton Green— Pearl Ash, Sst 51b (T. Taylor) 3 Also ran :— Carbineer, Woodnymph, Ugly Buck, Fusilier, Revolver, Necklace, and Satanella. Betting :— 2 to 1 against Ugly Buck, 3 to 1 against Carbineer, 5 and 6 to 1 against the rest. After one false start, Mr McLaughlin sent the youngsters away to a start of which Ugly Buck — who by the way does not belie his name — had two lengths' advantage, Fusilier being left atthepost. Justbeforethe turn into the straight, a blanket might have covered the field, though Trenton's colours showed prominently. The horses took the turn very wide, and Satanella here made a wonderful rush four or five strides, changing her position from fifth to second. Carbineer, however, swerved, and interfered with the chances of both Satanella and Gretna Green. Trenton, half-way up the straight, was challenged by Krupp, and a most, exciting race ensued, the judge giving his verdict in favour of Trenton. Woodnymph and Ugly Buck were never dangerous during the races. The totalisa, tor dividend was ±'8 14s, there being 952 subscribers, and only 98 on the winner. Time, lmin. 7isecs. Betting: 2. t0 1 against Salvage'; ,5 to 2 against Tim Whiffie'r'; 4 to 1 against Welcome Jac^/ , , This;race ,excited. great interest, &n<J Salvagewas a hot favourite. It was under-
stood that he was meant for it, and an imr pression seems to have got abroad that if lie was not able to win, Welcome Jack was to make an effort. Very few seem to have had any doubt as to Welcome Jack's ability to scoop the pool if he had been wanted, The horses were weighed out expedition sly, Sir Bedevere declaring two pounds overweight. The start was a grand one. Salvage led at the start, Maori on his quarter, the rest in a bunch, and Welcome Jack last. Before a furlong had beon traversed, Vortex's colours were in the van, and ho went on increasing his lead till at the end of the first mile he had a lead of about fifteen lengths, and was going strongly. Passing the stand he still led, Tim WhifHer second, Salvage third,, and Soukar last. At the back of the course Vortex began to ''shut up," and Salvage having passed Tim, was only a length behind "the sensational." At this point Tim was third and Libeller fourth. At the half-mile post, Salvage passed Vortex, who was almost immediately after passed by Tim and Libeller, and this position was held to the finish Salvage landing a pretty easy winner by a length, the same distance separating the second and third horses. Vortex was fourth, Welcome Jack fifth, and the much lauded Sir Bedevere last. There were ,1717 investors on the totalisator, 611 on the winner, the dividend being £2 10s. Time, 4min. 9^sec. Betting: Even money Her cules and Barbary, 2 to 1 against Woodpecker, 2 to 1 against Barbary, 3 to 1 against Clarence. Mr Pilbrow declared to win with Barbary. Clarence led at the start, but soon gave place to Woodpecker and Barbary. Passing the stand this position was maintained, the much-fancied Her cules being last. At the back of the course Barbary was a beaten horse, falling behind Clarence, and being also passed by Hercules, who came up grandly at the three-quarter-mile post. Wood pecker began to show signs of distress, and at the turn to the straight the Auckland crack was behind Hei'cules, who was endeavouring with might and main to get on terms with Clarence. That famous horse, however, won with pounds in hand by a length, Woodpecker a couple of lengths behind Hercules. Messi'S Houghton and Sheenan's horse lost four or five lengths by a stumble he made three-quarters of a mile from home. Totalisator dividend, £6 15s. Railway Plate of lOOsovs. For 2-year-olds and upwards. Weight- for-age. Distance, i-mile. Mr J. Carbineer was scratched. This was regarded as a moral for Welcome Jack, the betting being 4tol on him. Musketeer got away first, followed by Mitrailleuse and Wapiti. A quarter of a mile from home, Welcome Jack was taken to the front, winning by half a length from Wapiti, who beat Mitrailleuse by a length and a half. There were S5O investors in the totalisator, 589 on the winner, the dividend being 255. Time, lmin. 17fsecs. Free Handicap of 100 esvs. with a sweepstakes of 3sovs, each, to go to second horse. I Second Day. The second day's racing, under the auspices ot the Auckland Racing Club, eventuated yesterday. The weather was beautifully fine, and the racing, from a sportsman's point of view, was good. The attendance was nearly as large as that of Boxing Day. Only one thing occurred to mar the pleasure of the gathering, an unfortunate false start in the New Year's Gift. This matter, which created a good deal of angry feeling, will be found alluded to below. The totalisators were well patronised, over £6,000 going through the machines. The first race was the Derby Stakes, of 200sovs., added to a Sweepstakes of lOsovs. each. Second horse to save his stake. For three-year-olds. Colts. Bst 101b: illJies, Bst olb. Musketeer led at the start, Nelson last. At the back of the course Wapiti passed Musketeer, who was also passed by" Captain Russell's filly. Nelson -came up under the whip in the straight, and going through the horses like a flash, won by half a length, Wapiti being a length in front of Escopeta. Time : 2.50. Vortex, who carried 121b over, led at the start and kept in front to the stand. Libeller took the lead in the cutting, but Tim soon caught him, and looked so much like a winner that 10 to 1 was freely offered that he would win. Thirty yards from the post Libeller made a ' great effort, and catching Tim's rider napping, won by a length. Time, 3.11.Dividend, ».4, 368 out ot J 655 investors being on the winner. Fusileer, Woodnymph, Gretna Green, and Carbineer thinking the start a proper one, went away, and after a grandly contested race Fusileer won, Woodnymph being second, The decision being "no start," the horses went back, though Fusileer's owner loudly protested that the start was a false one. The second start was a good one, the fresh animals, however, having all the say. Fusileer led until the turn for home, but Krupp, who always held a prominent position, came away before the old stand was reached, and won by 2 lengths from Ugly Buck, Satanella third.
