London, December 5. — A scientific expedition to explore New Guinea has been formed under the sanction of the Ptoyal Geographical Association. The leader of the expedition is Mr Wilfred Powell, who, on the 13th ult., read a paper on New Guinea at the Colonial Institute. The Calcutta Exhibition was opened yesterday afternoon by His Excellency the Marquis of Ripon. In the course of his opening address he expressed a hope that the Exhibition would lead to an increase of trade between the Australian colonies and the Indian Eraph'e. The Duke and Duchess of Connaught were present at the opening ceremony. Captain Kennerly, who has been associated with General Maclvor in promoting a trading expedition to New Guinea, intends to sail to-morrow with a party which has been formed. They will embark at Havre, and on arrival at New Guinea will hoist the French flag. The party will call at Brisbane, en route foi'j New| Guinea. It is nowconeidered probable that France will relinquish all claim to the New Hebrides if she is allowed to occupy and obtain permanent possession of Raiatea.
