We extract the following from the K>poH of the "-Waikato Timefl * ofThui.sd;ty la-t:~ Road Improvements at- Te Aroha. — A communication was received from Mr Purchas, county engineer, saj'ing he estimated tluit to make the road through Mr Murphy's property, from the Wai< -^ rongonvii landing, would- cost £45. As to the proposed road through Messrs "Wilson and Joy's property, these gentlemen could not jointly agree on the matter of allowing the ro;id to pass through their property,. The line approved of by MV Wilson was? not approved of by Mi 1 Joy, and' vice verso\ The change they considered would not benefit theiu property. The new road would cost about £120. Estimated the; cost of making a good diagonal road through Shaftesbury at £100.— Cr. Firth proposed that any further action in thematter be deferred till the next meeting.—^ t Agreed to. It was also agreed that Cr X Whitaker be asked to confer with Mr* Purchas on the matter, and report at next meeting. Cemetery for Te Aroha.— JMfr Ferguson,, of Te Aroha, attended 1 on behalf of thepeople of that district, and drew attention. to ibo necessity of a proper cemetery site there. The present site was most in-, convenient. — Cr. Firth agreed to take thamatter in hand on his coming visit to the Aroha, and if possible nuike some arrange^ men! in the matter when there. Dishonest Contractors. ~ - Mf T. Q- " Sandes, engineer, reported oathe state of the mnin road to Te Aroha. Since last meeting he had' had four surfacemen en-t gaged on the road keeping it open for traffic During the recent flood the ap-. proaches to some of the new bridges liad been washed: away on, account- of defective and dishonest work oa the- part of the contractors. Some of the planks were not nailed to the piles y and so when the flood came the whole work gave waj\ One pile supposed to be 18 feet long waa cut short after being driven in 13 feet. In more than one instance dummy piles were driven in. One bolt in some cases was made do service for two. The whole dif «*. closed a dishonest intention; on. the part of those who did the work. The- consolation to the council was that the contractors who had thus tried to, wrong them had to. pay for the increased cost of making the job good. — The" Council considered tl fe Engineer's report betrayed a Riost dis-. gracef nl state of affttfre.
