OUR MINES.

, Tramway.-rrPuringthe past week the, weather has been all that could be desired, & rapid progress h&s'been made. Laying the rails on Butler's Spur is now finished, also horse grade to Werahiko Hoppers: All the rails and, required material are on top of t Butler's Spur. The May Queen Spur seif-acting rails will be laid early next week. Brake frame's on the ' Butler's and May Queen Spurs,, now in course of erection, are expected to be complete about the end of the coining week. The horse grade from the top of Butler's Spur is laid as far as the Moa Mine.- Twenty trucks will be ready next week. Premier.— Driving No. 1 level on the No. 2 reef is being continued with two men. The reof .is about five feet wide and gold shows very freely through the htbne. The quartz coming from the drive is being Btacked in the winze ready to be put in the hopper, when the mine tram is laid and hopper completed. The drives, passes, and every available place are being used for storing quartz. Canadian. — A three-penny call is advertised this week, with the proceeds of which it is intended to commence pros%gcting immediately. Gold has been found in the Colonist ground to the very boundary of the Canadian, and on^ the southern side is the New Find, in which gold is also found in the main reef. Surely with this reef running through its ground and proved gold bearing on its northern arid southern boundary, the Canadian is not a blank. 'New Find — No work other than of the connections is being done, and if the tramway will be complete in the time estimated, this Company have not much time to lose if they mean to start .crushing amongst the first. Wbrahiko and Waitoki. — As all connections and hoppers are complete, and also levels and passes ready, there are only two men employed breaking quartz in arise in the Waitoki. The reef is large, and shows gold, and the quartz broken out is of a most kindly character. Lucky Hit. — A trial parcel of about 5 tons of quartz is ready for shipment to the Thames, where it is to be treated next week. The result is expected to be satisfactory. Diamond Gully. — We are sorry to inform our readers that this Company, which \b one of the oldest on the field, has not commenced work yet, although they are aware the battery will be ready im-, mediately. They have been idle .for thelast four months instead of opening up their ground like the Premier, Werahiko, I ICureka, &c. If they intend to crush when the tramway is ready, thoy should start immediately and open up their reefs of which their manager, Mr Scott, had a very high opinion. ■ Colonist. — The men are employed sinktog a winze from the surface to their low level, which they expect to complete this ! week. They will then be ready to send enough quartz to the battery to keep as many stampers as they * can engage from the Battery Company employed, as they have the large reef discovered by JJone I Werahiko running through the whole i length of their ground. Gold can be seen in the stone for a distance of 300 feet along the surface from the Canadian boundary towards the Premier, and in, one place, where they put in a cross-cut, goldwas visible in the quartz after every shot fired for a distance of 12 feet. Inverness. — This licensed holding was formed into a company this, week ; 5000 shares were offered to tfoo public by Mr D. G. Macdonnel out of 25,000, and were taken up at once at 4s, and are now selling .it c premium. They have five tons in bags ready for crushing, out of which they expect a good return. ' Their reef is about two feet tihek, on which they have dnven about thirty-five feet, gold showing in the quartz the whole distance. This company is in a very good position, as the tramway passes through the ground about 70 feet below the present drive, so that connections will cost nothing, as it is in1 tended to put in a low level alongside the County tramway, on which a hopper is I about being erected. I Welcome.— The manager is getting timber, preparatory to sinking a winze from the creek to the low level. A parcel of very nice picked stone came to hand early this week. Vermont. — After intersecting the Welcome reef on the southern boundary, prospecting was commenced for the Waiorongomai lode, which by its bearings should traverse the entire length of the claim. Frazer, No. 1, 2 and 3, have been sold in the Warden's Court this week.
