GREAT FIRE AT DUNEDIN. THE LOSS ESTIMATED AT £1000,000
A fire broke out in the new railway goods shed at about half-past-eight o'clock on Tuesday evening last. The whole building, which was full of good s at the time, was completely destroyed within an hour. There was no water available for some and many thousands of people witnessedthe conflagration. Two nightwatchmen were on duty, one of whom was especially told off to watch the concern. A lot of imflammable goods was in the shed at the time, one lot of jewellery which was consumed by the by the flames is said to have been worth £5000. No correct estimate lias as yet beea given of the value of the goods and building destroyed, but an authority has given expression of opinion to the effect that £100,000 will not cover th actual loss. There was no insurance the building and goods destroyed.
