A survey has been completed of the Upper Wangaehu River on the* site of the proposed hydro.electric power station. The fall is said to be better than was first calsulated, and if the minimum flow is not less than three hundred cubic feet per second, which it is assumed to be, approximately 5000 h.p. will be obtainable at the po,wer station.

A farmer in the Waimate district' had a stroke of ill fortune one day last week (says the Timaru Herald). He was working a three-horse tßaxn in the field, and at dinner-time unyoked and took, the horses to their stables to feed. He put one horse in its stall, and. while tying it up loft the others standing at the stable door On going out for them he found both dead, they having been struck ' by lightning when he was in the stable. At Gisborne yesterday J. Neal and W. C. Gregory, of Tathape won the double-handed sawing championship' of Australasia (2ft logs) in 25 1-5 sees. In the single-handed sawing championship, S. Woodward (Kak. ahi) was first, and J Neal (Taihape) second, the time being (2ft. logs) lmin 10 3-ssec&. D. Pretty was third in the £IOO chop, which was won by O. Mather.
What is stated to be the largest diamond ever imported into the United States arrived- at New York on the Aquitania, in the possession of Mr Fred Whittram, manager of the Madrid branch of the Mercantile Bank of America, for disposal on account of AtrLeWHaJld, a former Sultan of Morocco. The diamond, which is of light straw colour, is a perfect stone, weighing 183 carats. Mr Whittram's wife, who was the custodian of the diamond during the crossing of the Atlantic , admitted that she slept uneasily while the precious stone was in her care ■
