NEW YEAR DAY SPORTS.

There, are good grounds for hoping that New Year's Day will furnish ideal weather for the Taihape . Athleti Club’s Sports. Amongst other things Taihape stands out very prominently amongst the towns of New Zealand as a supporter and an encourager of athletic games. No particular desire has been exhibited in favour’ of pacing and trotting ” clubs, but there is a notably strong expression of public opinion in favour of everything savouring of physical culture. The programme and prize list of the Taihape Athletic Club is worthey of a town four times its size, and it is true that Taihape is becoming famous as the home of athletic competitions throughout the Dominion. One only needs to look a.t the surprisingly Hong list of donors to the special prize list, which, taken in conjunction with the club prizes constitutes a tempting scries of baits to lure distant athletes to visit this town on New Year's Day in considerable numbers. From a spectacular point of view, the entries ensure a splendid day’s sport, and the natural beauty of the recreation ground must impress visitors

/most favourably. Success begets success, and if residents make the sports day a veritable gala day their enthusiasm will do much towards infecting visitors and causing Item to write Taihape down as the champion athletic sporting centre ci the North Island. If no opportunity is lost, or effort spared in cramming the day as full as possible .of everything that interests and contributes to popular pleasure, record success is assured. We sincerely hope that the Athletic Club’s Sports on New Year’s will form the rendezvous of every settler and citizens who can enjoy a really fine exhibition of athletic competition.
