BACK TO INDIA. COOLIES LEAVING FIJI The Aucklnad Star’s Suva correspondent writes as follows: \ What ,pau only be looked upon as a most serious calamity is taking place in Fiji. Influenced by a determined propaganda, inspired by the Indian nationalists, the Indian coolies are wildly anxious to get out of Fiji and god to India, The Ganges has already taken three cargoes, each equalling nearly 900 adults, and now' the Torilla is loading 1600 adults for Calsutta. Indians are selling land, houses and stock at immense sacrifices to get awmy, and hundreds are clamouring for passages daily. The position is quite a' serious one. The regrettable thing is that ho sooner do they reach India and become acquainted with the conditions there, than the unfortunate people want to get back to Fiji, but are not allowed to laeve unless they have money to the extent of £2O or more. A number of them recently memoralised the Mayor of Suva to arrange for their return to Fiji. The petition came from Colcutta, and was signed by a number of Indians who left Suva four to six months ago. The Indian Government won’t allow the Fiji Government to pay the passages of these ■ people. The Indians here are so fanatical that they refuse to believe any of these messages,' and declare they are all lies. Meantime our plantations are being seriously affected. One area of 70 acres of rubber is reported to have been thrown up and in 12 months will be an impossible jungle. Other areas of greater size are being seriously affected, and some action must bo taken speedily, or the production of the colony will be. seriously affected.
