PICTURE NOTES. By The Film Fiend. There will be two matinees this week at the Kings. On Thursday "The Shadow of Lightning Ridge" will be shown, but on Friday a special programme will be offered for the kiddies while the parents do their shopping—that's a good idea. So "The Miracle Man f is not com--ing after all it's hard luck, but "The All Red Route/' is something special in pictures and is sure to be popular here. The hospital patients are cordially invited to' see the, All Red Rouie; that's another good idea. THE KING'S TO-NIGHT. This feature is passed by the Cen. sor with the following recommenda. tion: — Recommended imore especi. for adult audiences. ■Never has Alice Brady done such clever, 'appealing and splendid work as in her latest Select picture JHis Bridal Night," which comes to the King's Theatre to.night only. The picture is a sure knock.out; it will sweep the audience out of their seats In the dual role, characterising the twins Vi and Tiny Playfair, Miss Brady is excellent. One minute the demure quiet, dignified Tiny, whose one bad habit is to' suck her thumb —the next minute the dashing, gay, flirtatious Vi, whose daring knows no bounds, not even to prevent her from eloping with another man on her bridal night—Miss Brady goes from one role to another with ease and finesse.
THE KING'S. THE SHADOW OF LIGHTNING RIDGE. ,In "The Shadow of Lightning Ridge" the latest E. J. Carroll Australian supeir-feature which is to be screened at The Kings Thursday and Friday, commencing with Matinee at 2 o'clock e Thursday "Snowy" Baker is given opportunities for the display of daring horsemanship and har raising stunts. 'There is nothing new under the sun' and this applies to motion pictures partcularly ( but Snowy performs feats as "The Shadow" that have never been seen in any, photoplay before. An incident that will live long in tb,e memory is his jump on horseback from a cliff sheer through the roof of a hut forty feet below. The sensationalism, of the jump is enhanced by the very dramatic reasons for the Shadow taking the plunge. There are other thrillers of equal calibre throughout this fast moving story of a good manfs fall from grace and his ultimate regeneration. "The Shadow of Lightning Ridge" is rich in romance and native humour, and, above all, the story grips with its own strength. It is something more than a . vehicle for the great Snowy Baker prowess. "Lightning Ridge V is a wonderful drama enacted as it is in the great open spaces of Australia it is brimful of action, atmosphere and character. Mr r Wilfred Lucas , dnrectedj ana Miss Brownie Vernon and Miss Boronice Vere the- young Australian who has so suddenly stepped into the ranks of the film stars are in the cast. The Box Plan is now open at Shejrwin's.
TOWN HALL. FOOTLIGHTS AND SHADOWS Beautiful Olive Thomas will be seen at the Town Hall on Friday night in Footlights and Shadows, a story of behind the scenes and the Midnight Follies of New York. It is an exceptionally brilliant production. RANGIWAEA SPORTS. MONDAY NEXT. The Rangiwaea School Suorts and Picnic will be held in the school grounds on Monday next (Boxing Day), when an exceptionally good programme of events will be got off. The function is very much more am. bitious than any held in past years, and a substantial sum has been al. lotted for prize money, in addition to which the children are being well catered for, the quantity . and quality of the toys for the latter being ex. ceptionally good. The athletic. &nd axemen's events should attract a large number of competitors, and the programme generally should be a good attraction for the public. Visi. tors from Taihape may rely on spending a most enjoyable day if they make the trip. The promoters are to be congratulated on their en. terpn'se in making up such an elab. orate programme, and it is hoped that such will be rewarded by a good attendance of the public. ©
