Harry Willis,. an unkempt-looking individual, who modestly admitted that he was "a wilcl man from the back of Taihape, who had ■ dodgtd conscription for years, and was finally run down by men on horseback,'' appeared in the Thames Court on Thursday of last week to answer a charge of vagrairrey. He admitted that he had cadged his way from Taumarunui to Thames, and said tfe was looking^for" work all the way, but could not. ,flnd any. When arrostdd as a result of complaints by Parawai residents; he was found sleeping in the Parawai railway station. Me wt..s unable to give the name' of anyone he had worked for during the past five years,' and told the police he was making for the Northern gumfields. When the Bench decided to give' the man a 42-miles lift towards the gumfields by sentencing him to two months' in Auckland gaol, accused said, in aoi aggrieved tone: "You?are making it pretty hot. Your summer will be over when I get out, and nothing doing in the work line.''
