The London Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of investigation into pilferages from the docks reports an enormous increase of pilfering since the’
■war, involving an increase in insurance premiums. The losses are nnot due to petty individual thefts but to well organised gangs of thieves and receivers. One Shipping Company is paying '£250,000 annually for claims. ..The Committee asks the Home Secretary, to prove a special detective force, trained in the habits and methods of river thieves.
STORM ON ENGLISH COAST. ' LONDON, Dec. 4. Several wrecks occurred during a Ifctorm on the west and south coasts last night, including the big steamers Angsir and Hather on the coast of Cornwall. The two crews, totalling 69, were rescued, that of the Hather toy lifeboats and the rocket apparatus. The Hathbr, with a German crew, was interned in Chili throughout the war.’ • 1 ■ "• The Angsir belonged to the Ministry of Shipping, and was about to undergo Survey before being handed over to the Japanese Government. When she struck it was impossible {to launch the boats, and an apprentice of 19 swam ashore with a line, (communication being then obtained by means of breeches buoy. Five of the crew of the Rhoscolyn lifeboat were drowned while proceeding to the assistance of the vessel Carnarvon Bay. Received 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Dec.. 5 Four of the crew of the Carnavon Kay were drowned owing to one of the ship’s boats being overwhelmed. An unknown schooner sank in the Humber, and all hands were drowned.
