THIS PROPOSED CONFERENCE. i A NATIONALIST'S REVIEW. IRELAND MUST MAKE TERMS. Received 10 a.m. LONDON, Dee. 2. i In support, of Mr Sweetman's, M.P., proposal to hold a Christmas Conference for Irish peace, the Star publishes a well-informed Connaught Nationalist's survey of the position. He says Government has now stopped the activities .of the" Irish Republican Government Army. The Republicans see nothing to be gained by fighting the Crown forces, but they see their every movement forestalled, their newspapers suppressed, their leaders sent to gaol, and the markets and railways closed. The Republican Army has had enough, and the Irish public realises that the outlook is black and Ireland must make terms with England. Received 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 2. In Ireland the newspapers are tentatively! discussing a Christmas truce. The London Daily News states that signals are already apparent in the blackness of the clouds, and quotes the Labour visit, and Mr Sweetman's proposals, coupled with the Premier's anxiety to end the terror, as being most promising.
