Petty fines -which a husband imposed ion his. neglected wife were described in. West London Police Court, when Mrs. Ivy Holliday was, granted a separation jorder and £2 a week maintenance. The parties -bad been married five years, the Court was informed, and there was one baby, aged 2§ years. 3?he husband earned £7 to £8 a week as a motor engineer, but only allowed Ms wife 3s a day. Even that pittance was reduced by "fines" of coppers when he considered i fehe had wasted food, and once be de- , ducted sixpence for "wasting soap". 1 Originally the family lived in a six-
