SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND.
WELLINGTON, Nov. 25. In connection with the campaign for the Save-the-Children Fund, Mayor Luke recently cabled Sir James Alien as follows: ‘‘Making an appeal in Wellington province for relief of distress in Europe. Is. the need urgent, and the administration of the fund effective?”
Sir James Allen replied as follows; ‘‘Please inform the Mayor of Wellington, in reply to his telegram of November 9 that money is urgently required by the Save-the-Childron Fund and Imperial War Relief Fund. Over £40,000 has been received from New Zealand for' the former, which is distributing the same through local agencies under an approvedv scheme, as per my telegram of November 1. The Imperial War Relief fund is organised to combat, through local distributing.agcucies, general distress and diseases. See telegrams, etc., between the Colonial Office, the Governor-General and the New Zealand Red Cross Societies since last June. A special typhus campaign will be organised . provided funds are available, but only £35,000 has been .received up to date for all purposes. They estimate their administration, charges at 10 per cent., whilst the cost of local agencies may amount to au additional 15 per cent. I consider these .excessive, and 7 if the funds are forth-
coming from New Zealand will endeavour to make similar arrangements as with the Savc-thc-Children' Fund. (Signed) Allen.”-
