The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 24, 1920. THE LATE HOSPITAL CARNIVAL.

With, which is Incorporated “The Taihape Post and Waimarino News ”

The Carnival held recently for raising the necessary money wnerewith to provide hospital accessories for " lucu pressing need has been felt foi a con . siderable time past in the Taihape district, was most successfully carried out, and the final 'results arc likely to prove highly gratifying to the whole community, and particularly to those who were notably conspicuous in thenefforts to achieve the utmost in the best interests of the district, Those men and women have well earned the community’s siucerest thanks, and heartiest congratulations, for, * from commencement to ending of the scries of functions organised, their energies never flagged or wavered; they had one purpose in view, and they pursued that purpose with inflexibility in eveiy way until much more than the mark aimed .at was accomplished. Instead of one thousand pounds, it is probable that a clear seven hundred pounds additional will stand to the credit of the Carnival Committee, and be available for handing over to the hospital authorities, • who haVf given the assurance that every shilling raised, with the Government subsidy thereon, shall he expended uptfn purchasing those things the people- of the district have long desired, as being essential in saving iffc and in mitigating the sufferings of those unfortunates to whom the provision of modern hospital equipment prove a blessing. Generosity is an outstanding trait in the character of the people of the Taihape district, and in no case is this more noticeable than in providing for the maimed .and sick, the infirm and those who need help through inability To help themselves. No deserving case is allowed to pass, and the tendency is to extend generosity to cases that doubtfully belong to the deserving category. Eight through the war the people of Taihape stood in the front rank in contributing to every patriotic scheme ■ for assisting and giving some comfort and pleasure to the men who occupied the cold, wet trenches in Europe, facing the Germans, waiting for the order that would loose the deash and let theni ( “over the top” at the world’s com"mon .enemy. It is not improbable that much of the practical sympathy shown to the hospital during the carnival week sprang from the knowledge that the local institution* was never free from the presence of men who came home from the war more or loss permanently injured. Be that as it may, it is with mixed feelings of pleasure and pride that Taihape’s newspaperchronicles the noble work, in the interests of 'the sick and injured, givers and workers have so generously and ’wholeheartedly achieved in the one week set apart for putting their, local Hospital on a modern footing. To the £I7OO contributed is to be added the subsidy of twenty-four shillings to every pound from the Government. The total amount available from both sources will be - upwards of £37oo—to be precise, £3740. The thought is, per-* haps, unreasonable, but the total so ifearly approximates £4OOO that the wish for another £IOO to make the total into round figures will not be suppressed. If there are wealthy landowners who have not yet contributed to the fund, will they, between them, send in the odd £IOO required 1 ? If not, perhaps Taihape’s grand entrepreneur, I Mr. Peyton, might be enticed by a look at the smallness of the sum required to suggest a way of swelling the £3700 into £4OOO. We know- it is positively unfair to ask for anything more than has been done, and it might be left to sorfle more propitious time, but from the editorial viewpoint £4OOO would look much better, and sound .much bettor, than £3700. It looks as though the mark has been missed, in spite of its very nearly being twice hit. However, that is a- question for the Hospital Carnival Committee, whose members have already done nearly double what they set out to do, and more than double what the public expected of them. As • the collective voice of the Taihape community, this journal extends to the Carnival Committee, helpers and generous givers the community’s heartiest thanks and congratulations. It is one of such instances that furnish the most reliablp materia? in building up a grand city.
