THE BOROUGH ROADS.

At the Borough Council meeting on Friday, a letter was read from the Taihape Chamber of Commerce, which to the bad state of the Main South Road inside the Borough area, and advocated that somethingshould be done to effect the necessary improvements as soon as possible. The Chamber also enclosed a copy ot e letter sent io the. Rangitikei County Council in connection with the' *ame road. - Cr. Cunninghame said that the portion of the road in the borough was certainly in a bad state, and was the worst bit. of road between Wellington and Taihape. He moved that the Chamber be advised that the necessary work would be done immediately. Cr. Reid said they could not get the roller to work on this road until they had a new' bridge over the Otalhape stream.

Cr. Davies considered that _ the work was urgent. If they could not get the roller over the bridge, extra assistance should be procured and -the road put in order. Cr. Keid said that all the' Borough roads were in bad order, and he &d not think the South Road was. so much worse to merit special treatment. The Borough Foreman , was asked for an opinion as to wether ''the work could be done, and explained that it would be no use to merely metal tno road, as large boulders were protruding, and would have to be broken up before effective repairs could t>e made.

The majority of Councillors being 01 opinion that the work' could not rte done but of revenue, as all the roaas needed attention, Cr. Cunninghame modified his motion to read to the effect that the Chamber of'Commerce be notified that the worK would he done as soon as possible, and this resolution was seconded and carried. Cr. Davies considered that they should decide -whether the work of improving. the roads should bo done out of revenue, or whether a special loan hould be raised. He moved that the Works . Committee ,he asked to prepare ,an estimate of the cost of necessary road works, with a view to having provision for the work matt In the next loan proposal. The motion was seconded by Cr. Fookes and carried.
