Mr Stanley Machin, president of the London Chamber of Commerce, interviewed, said the shrinkage affected both Dominions and foreign trade. The prohibition of shipments of gold from Australia had created an unfortunate state of affairs in the Anglo-Australian market and had had the effect of holding up an enormous number of Australian orders. If the present conditions were not remedied early, they would seriously injure Australian trade.

Last July the Government decided to extend the guarantee of Id per in on apples of approved varieties exported from New "Zealand np to 100,000 cases. As there seems to he isiderable ground for anticipating that if the market - conditions in the United Kingdom remain favourable the export of apples will 100,000 cases, Cabinet has agreed to extend the guarantee to cover 200,000 cases, on condition that the Government reserves the right to restrict the guarantee to a lesser quantity, after giving reasonable notice, if it is satisfied later on that market conditions at the other end do not, warrant exporting as much as 200,000 cases.
The cabled report of a paper roac at the annual meeting of the Australian Society of Dental Science, alleging that 90 per cent, of dentists allowed decay to proceed as a source of future income, was referred yesterday to by Mr Nelson . Mitchell, president, of the New Zealand Dental Association. He said: It is a wellknown/fact that the keynote, of 1 the teachings of the dental profession and
the practice of reputable dentists throughout the British Empire for the last. 25 years had been prevention in the interest of public health. Treatment of advanced or lieglected dental caries is of such an arduous and difficult nature that members of the profession are always eager to treat disease in the initial stages, and with
this object in view are continualfy impressing their patients with the need of periodical examinations .Such statements as these have been heard before in connection with the lawyer who foments strife and the medical man who keeps a patient sick for the reason of commercial gain, and it is Ito be hoped that the public opinion will be as little influenced by th? 3 latest bogey as the extravagant preposterous nature of the suggestions , deserves.
