THE EASTON CASE.
JURY DISAGREES. I - ANOTHER TRIAL ORDERED. PALMERSTON N., Nov. 14. The jury failed to agree in the case of alleged perjury agaiust Frederick Spencer Easton. "Mr. Justice Chapman ordered, another trial at Wanganui on the 25th. For the defence, Easton deposed that Wright had won £3OO with the horse Stevens, for which he had given a cheque for £2OO. Easton asked several j times for payment, but Wright said ! he was pushed, so he let him carry on. When Wright was disqualified Stevens | was in full training. This discounted j the story that Stevens had been turned 1 out in the cemetery paddock, as deposed by witnesses. He had sworn that the horse was not brought back to his place from Wright's, not that the horse was never back on the Moutoa Estate after the sale to Wright. Tiide cross-examination he said that his memory had failed after he had suffered from influenza. Askeff several questions as to his transactions on the turf, he replied: ''After what has happened before this Court on this terrible charge, and f/om a mountain •that has grown out of a molehill, T don't know what, to say.'" Two doctors were called, who certified that influenza had in some ca-,es i a serious effect on the memory, and three leading business men testified as to Easton's good character.
