HOSPITAL CARNIVAL.

PEOPLE'S DAY SPORTS, Enthusiasm was the keynote of themeetings in connection with People's; Day Sports. A splendid procession, based on the following is well underway, and is sure to be one of the finest turnouts held here. Trophies have been offered for the«| following:—The Best Floral or Fern Design; The Best Novelty Class; TheBest Naval or Military Turn-out; The Best Tradesman's Turn-out; The Best School Horse; The Best Backblocks Turn-out; The Best National Costume; The Most Original Horseman; The Most Humorous Pedestrian, and for Children in Fancy Costume. "With such a large field to choose from there is sure to be .competition' and some really excellent displays.

The Taihape Band (under Mr Geo... Brice) will lead * fl e procession. The procession committee consist of the following gentlemen, well-known for the enthusiasm and ginger t:hey put into everything they undertaker Messrs Mortland, Taylor. Smith, Marlow, Howens, Auld and Reid.

The following sports have formed themselves into the committee to runthe various sports events on the day: Messrs Fookes, McLaughlah 8r05.,, J. Ryan, Munro, A. M. Ryan, McLennany Geo. Bray, D. Bray, Bond, Anderson, Dunbar, Powell, Jamieson, Reid awl Walsh.

The following events will be runoff:—Golf Putting. Mr J. Mortland; Stepping the Distance, Mr O'Sullivan;' High Jump, Mr S. Reid; Tug-o'-War,. Mr S. Powell and Mr Jamieson; Ladies Tug-o'-War, Mr S. Powell and Mr Jamieson; Greasy Pig. Mr J.. P. Aldridge; 100 Yards Handicap, Mr. E. McLaughlan; Obstacle Ra-ce, Mr S. Reid and S. Dunbar; Children's Races, Messrs Wilson, Hall, Aldridge, Thurston and Rev. Lea; Throwing the Hammer; School Teams' Rel;>y Race; Hop, Step and .Jump.;, Mr S. Powell and Mr E\ McLaughlan; Sack Race, Mr S. Powell and Mt E. McLaughlan; Potato Race. Mr S. Powell and Mr E. McLaughlan; Goal Kicking, Mr M. McLaughlan; Nail Driving for Ladies, Mr Emerson; Musical Chairs for Cars, Mr Emer-. son and Mr Davies; Horse Events,, Mr Bray .and Mr Sinclair. ■-••..

! SACRED CONCERT. On Sunday evening, next a Sacred Concert will be given in the Town. Hail, commencing at 8 p.m . when Hfc Worship the Mayor will preside. . A good musical programme has been arranged, which is advertised in this issue, and should attract a good audience, in addition to the musical programme. Short speeches will be delivered'by R, W. Smith, Esq., M.P., and the Revs. W. P. Stent and J. C. Loan on hospital needs.

A hearty invitation is given t'o all" to be present. HOSPITAL STAFF STALL. On Wednesday next, the staff and patients will conduct a stall in thehospital grounds, dispense afternoon tea, and conduct cup-reading, etc. Those • k who attend the big party in the T grounds on Wednesday should look out for this stall.

CONCERT AT UTIKU.

j A successful concert was. held at. j TJtiku last evening when an effort J was made to launch the Hospital CarI nival scheme at that centre. j Messrs J. R. Cunninghame and L. j Banks ran cars containing the Taihape performers. There was a good attendance, and Mr Cunninghame occupied the chair. F ' Proceedings were commenced by Mrs Banks who sang "The Dear Homeland." On being recalled that lady rendered "Mary," and afterwards "Coming Home"; Mrs Durand sang "The Carnival," and "The Better Land'''; also as an"encore "O Promise M*e." Mr Jackson was in excellent voice in "The Road to Tipperary," as also was Mr A. Thompson with "The Skipper.'? Mr R. B. Smith's rendering of "I Hear You Calling Me"' called for applause and the singer responded with "A Chip of The Old' Block.", A duet "The Baffle EJve," bv Messrs Smith and Thompson, was wcjt received. Mrs Thompson , acted as accompanist. Four elocutionary items were well rendered by Miss Pees. Mr McGrath also gave five elocutionary items of a. very high order. In a brief speech Mr Cunninghame outlined the hospital scheme; the hearts and pockets of those present' were soon reached and some good giving resulted. Mr C. S. Arthur and Rev. W. Lea also spoke.
