THE GAMING COMMISSION. WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. ■The personnel of the Gaming Commission is now completed, and the only matter remaining for Cabinet approval is the order of reference. It is understood that the allocation of representatives on the Commission jisr, North Island, three; South Island, two; also that Mr. Fred Earl will be chairman. ALLEGED PROFITEERING. DUNEDIN, Nov. 1. William Penrose, draper, was to-day charged before Mr. Bartholomew, S.M., with profiteering in connection with the sale of a skein of Roslyn wheeling wool. For the prosecution it was alleged that 2s 2d was demanded, while the average price in Dunedin at the time was Is skl per skein. The case is proceeding. THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS. 9 WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. a Mr. Albert Jackson, B.A., V has been nominated as the Wellington candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship. BOY ADMITS INCENDIARISM. PALMERSTON N., Nov. 1. In the Police Court Clarence James t Davison, aged 15, pleaded guilty to setting fire to Lfmmon’s butcher shop in Levin, and .was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
BEDDING FACTORY AFIRE. AUCKLAND, Nov. I. -V fire which started in Macky, Logan, Caldwell, Ltd.’s Redding’factory in Lome, Street yesterday afternoon, continued smouldering, and firemen had to keep an eye on it to prevent another l outbreak. The fire got a&ong the kapoc stored in large quantities on the premises, and about 150 bales were destroyed, the value of the kapok being £lO per bale. In addition to this some beds, fibre, and mattresses were damaged, the total loss running into about £2OOO, which was covered by insurance. It is not known how the fire started. Without divulging <the figures he would say ( that these j should further substantially increase tjie cost of living. The Court would make a formal pronouncement later in the present session. . The new bonus would date from November.
DIVORCE CASE. ALLEGED ADULTERY ' * •’ ’ AUCKLAND, Oct. 1. Allegations of adultery; were- made against Ernest Frank, Andrews, secretary of the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association by his wife, Mary Andrews, who petitioned for divorce at the Suprerde' Court to-day before Mr Justice Cooper and a jury. The defence was a denial of the allegations. The case has not concluded. TIMBER CARRIERS. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. The brigantine Zita, and the schooner Lily have been chartered by the Government for twelve months. They will be engaged in carrying timber from the West Coast ports to Wellington. »
ALLEGED CATTLE STEALING. TAURA NGA, { Noy. 1. At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court to-day Alfred Stewart was charged with stealing a cow and calf, valued at £l2, the property of a native of Papamoa. After an alßday hearing accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Auckland. Bail was allowed, self in £2OO and two sureties of £BOO each, or one of £2OO. MINING REGULATIONS. l WESTPORT. Nov. 1. A meeting of the Westport branch of the Mine Managers’ Association was held during the week-end for the purpose of discussing the amendments. and additions to the coal mine regulations, and after an exhaustive discussion it was resolved to send representative* to Wellington. Lord Jellicoe has placcor an order locally for a small yacht, which he intends to sail himself in races on the harbour. I CUP WEEK. ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS TO CLOSE DOWN. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. At a ballot of the Addington Railway Workshops’ hands it was decided to close the workshops for the whole of next week (Cup Carnival Week). The voting was: For, closing, 260; against. 162. In consequence of the ballot the manager of the workshops, posted a notice that the shops would be closed from Saturday, November G, at noon, to the morning of Monday, Isth. It is stated that "the minority are not satisfied with the result, many married men being reluctant to lose a week’s wages. It is understood the loss of wages to the Addington works through the week’s holiday will be about £3OOO. Work, however, will be provided for some of the hands. It appears that the holiday for Carnival Week has boon the custom for some years past. The men are entitled to a certain amount of annual leave, and they prefer to take part of it in a Carnival .Week holiday.
PRICE OF BUTTER. WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. * The Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-day passed a resolution that the retail price of butter should bo 2s 4d for giving a fair return for handling the commodity. In the course of the discussion the /principle of paying producers a subsidv from the Consolidated Fund in order to keep down the price to local consumers was condemned!, as ’being unsound in principle. • The president ( Mr. M. It is understood the consignment consists of 12 Avro machines and fWoD.H. 9 bombing machines. They will be stored at Sockburn.

; , TIMARU, Nov. 1. '‘The N.Z. Aero Transport Company has received a formal offer of a of two Avros and three De Havilanc ’planes now at Wash dyke, on condition that the machines are kept in airworthy condition and are used in the advancement of aviation in the Dominion. The intention is to establish a service Timaru-Invercargill, TimaruMount Cook, and later on include Queenstown.
