CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce was held last night, when there were present: —Messrs J. E. Ounninghame (chair), F. Marlow, H. D Bond, A. E. 1 Fannin, A. Gifford, R; A. Davies, E. McLanghlan J. G. Oldham, A. R. Muuro, A. Lawson, J.‘P. Aldridge and the secretary. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. . '* Outward correspondence was read and approved, and inward correspondence was dealt with as follows:—* From Eangitikei County Council and Waimarino County Council re main north road, an<j outlining improvements proposed.—Received From Minister of Railways re Chamber’s representations re mainte ranee of present daylight expresses, and stating same would be considered at proper time.—-Received. Prom Borough Council re Chamber’s recommendation that public conveniences he provided for in next loan schedule and stating that the matter is being attended to. —Eeceived. From Minister of Customs Department re recommendation that' Customs official be appointed at Taihape Post Office; and from Customs 'Department re same, advising that there was no officer with the special knowledge required at the Taihape Post Office, and asking for particulars of delays complained of. —Resolved " that specific case be quoted, and ul-v .;r----ther representations be made. From Borough Council, Mangaweka Town Board, Eangitikei County Council, Mr F Swindells. Mr W. Glenn, M.P., and Minister of Health, re base hospital at Taihape; the Minister of Health contending that the rime was not opportune for the establishment Di a base'hospital.—Messrs Rinninghame, Munro and Fannin were appointed a sub-committee to consider tjie proposed boundaries of the Hospital') District, and it was resolved .that representatives of the various .local bodies concerned be asked to meet the committee. Prom j Minister of Immigration in reply to Chamber’s recom r inflations re promotion of immigration of right class of people. The Minister stated that the difficulty chiefly experienced was on account of the shortage of, shipping, and explained what the Department was doing at present to encourage assisted immigration of special classes of workers.—Received. From Mr W. Glenn, M.P., Tourist Department, and Waimarino County Council, re Tokaanu Road, in r.-ply to the Chamber’s request that highway to National Park should be kept rn good state of repair.—Resolved that Public Works Department he also, written to in connection with the matter.

From Hospital Carnival Comm'tiee, asking for co-operation of Chamber in connection with the Carnival, nr.tt that the Chamber be represented at the Carnival Committee meeting on Wednesday.—Resolved to individuady support the Committee, and suggesr. that the sports bodies be oonsnltea From same, advising that Minister of Public Health may be present dining the Carnival, and asking that the Chamber assist in arranging a reception to the Minister. —Resolved that a deputation wait on the "Minister when in Taihape, and Messrs Ourminghame, Davies, Oldham and Aldridge were appointed to represent the Chamber.

From Wellington Co-operative Waterside Labour Employment Association re weights of sacks of potatoes, and asking Chamber’s assistance in limiting the weight of sacks to 2081b5.; and intimating that i) weights are not so limited, workers would haye to refuse to handle them.—Received. GENERAL. Re extension of overhead railway footbridge, it was decided to further represent tire matter. Resolved that secretary ascertain if any action had been taken in connection with the Chamber’s remit to last Conference in connection with Highway. , It was decided to forward a remit to Conference urging that proper attention should be given to the routes leading to the National Park. The Waiotapu Settlers’ Association wrote ro Rotorua-Taupo railway, asking the co-oporation of the Chamber in urging the settlement of the pumice country which 'is at, present the largest undeveloped area in New Zealand. A. pamphlet was enclosed illustrating what was being produced on this class of country.—Received. Mr J R. Cunninghame was appointed delegate to the annual Conference.

Mr Cunninghame brought up matter of endeavouring to secure representation of Mangaweka, Ohingaiti, and other places' On the Taihape Chamber. He had mentioned the matter n-tten travelling round the district, .and It had met with support.—lt was pa r. ted out that the Council was now a. full body, and it was decided that an cf-

Mgngaweka and Ohlngarti to assist the Chamber, by drawing attention to matters which the Chamber could deal with. - Re Main South Road,* it was jed that a letter be written to the Taw hope Borough Council, Ranghikcr ■bounty Council, representative of theCounty Council for that area, and the Mangaweka Town Board, urging improvement of the road. Re lighting of overhead footbridge if ■pas decided that the Borough Council be urged to obtain permission from the Railway Department to instal a. ■*light on the bridge. Resolved that Postmaster-General be written to and the need'for a postal parcel delivery be urged.
