WHANGAREI CROWD FINED. WHANGAREI, Oct. 27, At the Whangarei Magistrate's Court, beore Mr F. H, Levien, S.M. . considerable local interest was attaene<j to a bookaking case in which liesides the principal, 22 local "sports" "were inculpated,'as having made bets in contravention to the Gaming Act, which came into operation on the 2Sth Of August, this year., Leo Lowry, a, mere youth, who, by subsequent evidence, was clearly an amateur at the game, was charged that he did carry on the business of a bookmaker, accused pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined £2O with costs 7/ allowed. The following 22 persons were then charged with having made bets with a bookmaker (Lowry), and were each fined £3 and 7/ costs: M. Briggs, S. Hopewell, D. W. Ruff, D< McLennan, I. Moore, H. Forsyth, D. Patterson, W. Scally, W. Bropfty, Peter Chaffc, C. Shipman, M, F. M. Whitelaw, C. Perry, A. Calkin, L. J. Hoare, D. Schmidt, C. Maloney, J. H. Rooke, W. Kaire, D. Kaire, L. Tierney, V. Hill. All of the accused 1 pleader guilty. |
