LONDON, Oct. 25. According to a report from Athens, which has not yet been confirmed, King Alexander of Greece died today, from the effects of a monkey's bite. The question of his succession is likely' to be fraught with •great difficulty. CANADA AND UNITED STATES. Received 9.30 a.m. .' WASHINGTON, Oct. 26. The British Embassy states that the decision regarding the appointment of a Canadian Minister to Washington rested entirely with the Canadian Government, and the, fact that no appointment was made was due to circumstances concerning the Canadian Government alone. ' It is understood that a Minister may be appointed next year, though nothing definite has been decided. BOLSHEVIST . ARRESTED. ' Received 9.20 a.m. , : .. , LONDON, Oft. 26. . The Daily Mail states that detecttives have arrested an. alleged secret, courier of , the ■ Bolshevik Government, who was engaged in bringing letters and money to England. He declined to give any aecount of himself. Documents of great importance were secured, and startling disclosures are expected. GERMAN BUDGET DEFICIT. Received 9.20 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 26. The Daily Mail's Berlin correspondent states that the German Budget shows a deficiency of ninety-four milliards of marks. HONOURING THE DEAD. Received 9.30 a,m. PARIS, Oct. 26. Newspapers in appreciating England's burial of unknown soldiers in Westminster Abbey, suggest the burial of a poilu (a French private) at the Pantheon on the fiftieth anniversary of the Republic. RUSSIA AND ROUMANIA. OVERTURES FOR PEACE. Received 9.30 a.m. COPENHAGEN, Oct.* 26. A message from Warsaw states that Tchicherin has accepted peace overtures from Roumania, and has declared that Russia is ready to repay Roumania six hundred million lire in gold which was deposited in Russian banks during the war.
AN AUSTRIAN SCANDAL'. ARCHDUKE RUDOLPH'S DEATH. A RIOTOUS DINNER. Received 9.50 a.m. BERLIN, Oct. 26. The ex- Archduke Leopold Ferdinand publishes in the Morgen Post a new version of the death of the Ai chduke Rudolf of Austria. He states that the Emperor urged him to hi eak off an intrigue with Baioness Vetseia. Rudolf agreed, and went to see her for the last. .time. Among the guests at the Baroness’ house were two of her relatives, brothers named Hector and Aristides Baltazzi, the former of 'whom had been engaged to the baroness. After dinner, the men drank deeply, and a quarrel arose between the Ba.ltazzio and Rudolf Champagne bottles flew across the table, shattering Rudolf’s skull. At that moment the Baroness entered the dining room, and one of the Baltazzis fired a revolver at the Baroness, who fell dead beside Rudolf. In the ipidst of the scene of. blood and broken glass, the guests were sworn to secrecy and were pledged to declare that the victims committed sucide. All the participants in the drama are now dead. ■ UNCONQUERABLE PRIDE. SCIENTIST STARVES HIMSELF. Received 9.30 a.m. VIENNA, Oct. 26. A leading scientist, Professor Oar-' gules, meteorologist, succumbed to slow starvation, his monthly pension of 430 gronen being insufficient to provide needful maintenance. Pride and an unconquerable spirit of independence prevented him from accepting assist-
ance from friends. Many similar cases have .occurred among the intellectual class in Austria, the depreciated value of the kronen producing starvation of individuals. PROHIBITION IN CANADA. BOLSHEVISM IN ENGLAND. SENSATIONAL DISCLOSEK'LS. Received 9.50 a.m, LONDON, “ct. 26. A youtli, believed to be a Bolshevik spy, was 'charged with failure to register as an alien. The-police stated that he was a most dangerous undesirable, and was manifestly acting between the revolutionists in England . and Russia. Among his papers was found a letter from Sylvia Pankhurst to Lenin, wherein she said-the situation in England was acute, but they were not yet ready for a revolution, but were moving swiftly thither. Exsoldiers were armed and drilled, “but don’t exaggerate, as these things are not formidable yet.' She makes several references to a campaign for seizing factories, and recounts how mem- j bers of her party broke up Mr. Lans- j bury’s meeting because he advised peaceful methods. She inform#! Lenin of . her arrest, and said she expected six months’ imprisonment, but feared the hunger strike was useless, as the Government allowed the Irish hunger-strikers-to die. Nothing would come of propaganda work unless the Third j Internationale furnished the promised j Chairman. I It was stated that accused was seen, in company with Miss Gilbertson, a British Communist, leaving the house of Lestrange Malone, M.P. He gave no name.
QUEENSLAND AND INVESTORS. UNEASINESS IN LONDON. Received 9.50 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 26. The brief cabled summary of Mr.' Theodore's election speech at Mackay, Queensland, has created some apprehension amoiig holders, a.nd especiallysmall holders, of Government stock. Mr. Hunter has inquired of Mr. Theodore regarding the accuracy of the report, and Mr. Theodore has replied that it was garbled. He said that investors in Queensland securities could rest assured that the C4overnment would honourably meet obligations. Mr. Hunter, in issuing" a statement, says it is unthinkable that it could be otherwise, since one of the first charges on the State revenue, was the interest on its securities." He adds: "Mr. Theodore is confident that the £2,000,000 works loan will be fully subscribed."
