A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned at the inquest .on Henry William Gosling, aged 53, who was found yesterday hanging by a strp.p in the outhouse of. a whare wliere he lived. He had a peculiar disposition, and 'had been out of work for some time

DARGAVILLE, Oct. 21. | Great interest was manifested in jthe loan poll yesterday, £-40,000 being required for general improvements, the erection of a pubilc library and municipal buildings. Fifty per cent of eligible ratepayers voted, and the proposals were carried by three to one. The Mayor (Mr Hornblow) and councillors received an ovation when the result of the poll was declared. 9 LIMITED SHOP HOURS. WELLINGTON. Oct. 21. The Minister of Labour is introducing, an amendment of the Shops anC Offices Act to provide statutory limitation of shop hours to 48 weekly, Instead of 52, and empowering the Arbitration Court to fix shorter hours when dealing with particular classes of business.
WAR GRATUITIES. EXTENSION OF PAYMENTS. WELLINGTON. Oct, 21. • Acceding to many requests to remove anomalies in the distribution or the Expeditionary Force war gratuity, the Government has introduced jan amendment to the Military Service Bill which will enable the gratuity to be paid at the discretion of the Manlister of Defence, to a personal representative of a deceased soldier who would have been entitled thereto, and it will be distributed as if it formed part of Ms estate. In order to meet other cases of hardship to dependents of deceased soldiers who dot not come within the scope of the original grak uity scheme it is provided that on application by any relatives of deceased, or by any person who, during any period of infancy of deceased, had been in fact whether legally or not charged with liip* maintenance, £are and control, the Minister may refer the application to the War Pensions Board for consideration and . report, and may, on the recommendation ol that board, make such payment to applicant as he thinks fit. v. .
