TEACHERS' SALARIES.
Substantial increases announced. WELLINGON, Oceober 13. -The increase in primary and native school teachers 7 salaries were announced by the Minister of' Eedueation to-day. Hon. Parr said that in distributing .the quarter o'f a million authored by Cabinet his main object has toeen to make the teaching profession • inoie attractive, to young people, and ' to <rive consideration to the interests of the country child. The Department would increase the capitation of hackMock schools to £ls per head per am* unni. The salaries of schools in grades 1,2, and 3, with average attendance ranging from nine to 120 has been increased so that the new scale would range from £7O to £l2O better than two years ago. The result should he that no teacher could reasonably refuse to take a country school. Salaries of infant mistresses and senior women teachers in the larger schools had been raised "a grade. In addition to the ordinary increases a special allowance of £lO was Seing added to the married allowance as some recognition of the responsibility of the family man. Licensed teachers would receive a. flat rate increase of £3O, and uncertificated teachers an increase of £2O, subject, in the latter case, -to the iproivision that, next year, when the inspector had been able to make a ; t>road classification separating the most efficient from the others, the scale would be modified in favour of a somewhat higher payment to the more efficient. The effect of the new scale for entrants to tlxe profession would be that pupil teachers and probationers would be ever an avearge increase of £3O per annum, he Trange of. salaries for assistants represented an increase of from £9O to £l2O. In the last two years the maximum for head teachers would be £6OO in schools with over 480 pupils, and District High School was attached there would he an additional £3O to £SO. Native school teachers would, receive the same increments as primary 'School teachers. The new scale for technical and secondary teachers har been completed, but could not be brought into' 1 operation until the Education Act Amendment was approved by the j Hoiise. !
