LABOUR TROUBLES.
o STRIKE IN PORTUGAL. • - i ‘ i REVOLUTIONARY CHARACTER. LONDON, October 7. A general strike of a revolutionary character has broken out throughout Portugal, including postal* and telegraph employees. News from Portugal is meagre. The Portuguese legation states that the strike reports are exaggerated. There is only a partial railway strike. Many trains are running, and there have been no disturbances, BRITISH MINING CRISIS. TRIPLE, ALLIANCE’S ATTITUDE LONDON, October 7, , It is understood the yarious discussions of the Triple Alliance made it clear that the miners must pursue a reasonable attitude of give and take. The. miners could not ask large bodies of workmen to strike when the difference between the two sides was or, y a shilling per day. Although tlis executives iu many leading coal districts have declared against the owners ’ terms th eGovernment does not attach any importance. believing that though the hotheads captured theh machine vote, heads captured the machine vote, for peace. Mr. Smilie issued a strong appeal, declaring that it would be in the best interests of the miners to accept the proposals as a temporary measure, utilising the next three months to secure a satisfactory agreement. it would give air opportunity to prove that the declining output was mainfy due to the owners rather than the miners.
