ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
WOMAN’S HYSTERICAL ACT. AUCKLAND; Sept. 28 A respectably-dressed woman about 55 years of age, whose name is not known, made a determined effort to drown herself in th'e tfffe at St, Mary’s Beach at two o ’clock this afternoon. The tide was low, and she ran across the sands, and, fully clothed, waded out and threw herself beneath the waters, rolling and struggling out towards the deeper water. A gentleman who happened to be* on the beach rushed into the water and dragged the woman out, ‘ but the police found her in a s. ate of hysterical. collapse, and when taken to the Ponsonby police station she refused to give her name. Inquiries into the circumstances of the affair, and the motives which prompted the woman to attempt-her life, are now' proceeding. SUDDEN DEATH. — " \ WAIHI, Sep;. 28. An old man named Albert Oakleigh, aged 75, a widower, a tailor by oecm patidn, dropped dead in Union Street near Lis residence last evening. ; CONTRACTOR KILLED. TE KUITI, Sept. 28. - It is-reported to the police that a contractor named J. Patterson was killed during blasting opeTations on road formation work behind Mairoa. No details are available.
