DISASTROUS FIRE.
IN WAITAKI HIGH SCHOOL. LARGE PORTION DESTROYED OAMARU, Sept. 22. A disastrous five occurred in the Waitaki Boy’s Higli School this morning. When it was discovered, about 1 o’clock it had a strong hol'd, and as the water supply was limited to an inch, and a-half pipe the fire brigade was unable to render 'any assistance. By means of the school ’s hoses and buckets Hie masters, pupils, and volunteers succeeded in preventing the flames extending from the now wing, where it originate!, to other portions Of ilhe building The part destroyed included the art room (with a comprehensive stock of models, etc.), the home science rooms (with a big stock of chemical's and elaborate paraphernalia), several class-rooms, and music, room, together with the school cups, trophies, and a great collection of valuable pictures (the p-onertv of the«rector), with which the wafhs of the .rooms and. corridors wore adorned. The’ building is of Oamaru stone, and a largo part is- t-dll standing, the other portion having been blown down by an explosion of chemicals in i he laboratory

It is partly covered by insurance. The school only resinned yesterday after the term vacation. There were over 200 bov.s in resident in the dormitories.
