EUROPE’S STARVING CHILDREN.
APPEAL FOE’FUNDS. (Contributed.) General Smuts says: “We dare not. sit stßi. As Cnristians, as human beings, surrounded by oar food and our comforts, we may not fold our hands, while millions of our kind are stricken with starvation" and disease. Pre-oc-cupied as I am with ether dui.ies of the heaviest character, I am unable personally to take charge of the. organisation necessary for carrying, out this appeal. But I am willing to help , by word and deed to the best of my abiiky. I trust that others will takecharge of this great Christian, humane work, and that the ‘Save the Children.; Fund’ will find the most whole-heart-ed co-operation from all churches, and parties, and the whole population..!’ The above statement is from one of the greatest leaders of out Empire. It furnishes a strong appeal and is worthy of serious consideration. Alongside of this appeal we may place the following appeal by the International Socialists’ Bureau under the heading: A MESSAGE TO ORGANIZED LABOUR.
It! says: “The result of the war is this—that a great part of Europe is in ruins, and that the children, its future citizens, are threatened with death, or with diseases worse than death. It is only by bringing all the forces of the world into action, and by harmonising them, that the final tragedy* can be averted ; and if organised labour will' only join in this humanitarian work the world will soon find the path leading'out of the present dreadful gloom.” • During the first nine months of its existence the “Save the Children.Fund,” with its headquarters in London, has collected £250,000 sterling, and has distributed this money through two agencies in Armenia, seven in Austria, two in Czecho-Slovakia, two in Hungary, one in Montenegro, five in Pa 1 and 1 , six in Serbia and others in Russia etc. New Zealand’s effort has yet to be written. A noble lea(T has been given and already many thousands of pounds have been raised from Auckland to the Bluff. Let us also dp our part in a great and hu* mane work.
