A writ for the Bay of Plenty byeelection was issued on Thursday, and the roll was closed on Thursday night. The election will be held on September 30.

CHRISTCHURCH COLLEGE
MASTER
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Mr. G. E. Blanch, Headmaster of Christs College, died of pneumonia at an early hour this morning. Deceased, ■who was 57 years of age, has been in charge of the College for about six years, and was to have retired at the end of this year. He came from Melbourne, and leaves a widow and family.
THE DAYLIGHT EXPRESS STORY

A telegram from Auckland published this morning suggests fhe possibility of the establishment of a daylight express between Auckland and Wellington, as weP as other radical changes in the service. The general manager, Mr. R. W. MeVilley, states that no changes are contemplated. GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS. HAMILTON, This day. In the professional final Kirkwood bear East 4 and 3, bis round was 75. The final Amateur Championship, the first round —Ross v. Morpeth. Ross was 3 up at the 7th, and 2 up at the 9tb. He started with six balls and his first three took 38 to Morpeth’s 40. In ‘he second 9 holes Ross wa s a good deal of the line, while his opponent played perfect golf, doing six holes in succession in four, and sqaring the match at the 12th. Morpeth was -one up at the 13th and three up at the 17th. Ross won the home hole in a brilliant four and was two down in the morning round.
