PARIS GIRL HAUNTED.
A young girl belonging to the Paris mderworld, who for two years had aeen haunted by the thought of a s,Time she had not committed and had been unceasingly dogged by the police, has been acquitted on a charge of murder brought against her in February, 19.18. Two girls "vvcre walking along the Paris boulevards at a late hour in November, 1916, when suddenly one of them uttered a cry and sank to the ground. She -was immediately taken to the hospital, but died a few hours afterwards. Death was, caused by a violent knife thrust. Suspicion fastened on her companion, Jeanne Lacoste, but when a search was made for her she had disappeared. Two years late Lacoste was. tried by default and condemned to death for murder. Exactly two yea.rs later to a
day Lacoste was discovered occupying a handsome villa with another girl. The inconsistencies in the evidence of several witnesses, combined with a ■brilliant ami convincing' speech by her counsel, resulted' in the verdict of murder of 1918 being quashed, and she was acquitted.
