THE MARRIAGE LAWS.
RESOLUTION BY WELLINGTON PRESBYTERY. DIVIDED OPINIONS. WELLINGTON, This Day. A resolution was moved at a meeting of the Wellington Presbytery to put on record its hearty approval of the proposed am end men* to the Marriage Act, and hoping that it would be ;passed without alteration. Some doubt was expressed as to the exact meaning of the clause, and a certain amount of opposition was offered.
The Rev. Comrie said the Roman
J Catholic Church should have no right i to impugn the validity of marriage,
J but he wanted to be sure of the real I interpretation of the clause.,.
Ultimately, a committee was appointed to obtain further information, and the matter was adjourned.
REV. HOWARD ELLIOTT REPLIES
WELLING TON Sept, 'l4
The Rev. HoAvard Elliot made the following statement to-night:— "The pronouncements which have been made by Archbishop O'Snea and Bishops Cleary and Brodie respecting amendments to the Marriage Act are remarkable in their ingenuity in avoiding the real point at issue in the proposed legislation. The prelates named •would make it appear that the aim of the clauses referred tc is to make it an offence for members, of their denomination to hold or proclaim marriage as a sacrament, whereas the clause proposes to make it an offence to allege either expressly or by implication, that any persons lawfully married are not truly and sufficiently married, or that the issue of any lawful marriage is illegitimate or born out of true wedlock. The proposed legislation will indicate the supremacy of British law to protect the rights of citizens and to guard children against the stigma of being branded illegitimate and in so doing will have the hearty support of every MbBritisher.
