ACCLIMATISATION MATTERS.

We think we may justly claim for Taihape that whatever its limitations, its people are very much to the fore in the matter of sport, and in this regard we re|pr particularly to those whose game is fish, fur and feather, in all of which branches of sport we can justly claim that Taihape more than holds its own. It is* a matter for congratulation when it is generally known that, excepting only Palmerston North, a town of nearly ten times this size, there were during the last fishing season more licenses taken out in Taihape than in any other country town in the Wellington District: that number does not include the licenses issue in Mataroa which is in the Wanganui Acclimatisation District. To shew that the parent society is doing its duty by this place that so loyally supports it, we may mention that no fewer than 81,000 trout fry (brown and rainbow) were,; received from the Wellington Society’s hatcheries, in Masterton. and were successfully liberated in the Hantapu, Moawhango, Rangitikei (Utlku and Mangaohane) and in the tributaries of those streams. For the last three or four years the local Committee ha s directed its efforts towards improving the Moawhango. and has liberated in that stream practically all the Rainbow consignment's received, with the result that Rainbow trout, in increasing, numbers, are now being taken from that river which gives fair promise of being a magnificent Rninhow stream in three years. It is indeed to bo Ifeped that the local Committees ’ efforts have been appreciated by the sportsmen of the district and that its annual meeting which is advertised in another column and which will be held on Thursday evening next, will bo largely attended.
