Tlie miners are not desirous i of sa ling stocks owing to depreciation, hence they desire a loan. A suggestion thar the Government and the niinCVs should agree-to a pubtie enquiry concerning increased output and the .relation of wages thereto, is gaining adherants among labour ea tiers. The i’oivsmouth Women’s National Tclitical League is strenuously striv- j ing to avert a strike, and is organising a conference of miners and trans- j porters’ wives in London with a view to proposing that the wievs, equally with the husbands-, participate in strike ballots. Many similar conferences are being arranged in the provinces. The Observer emphasises the widespread growing conviction hat if Messrs. Horne and Smilfie meet a way out of the impasse could be found. The “Sunday Times’’ says' Messrs. Smillie and Horne agree to the principle of mediation: they differ ori’y on matters of detail and machinery. END OF THE BIG WHEEL. LONDON, Sept. b. The world-famous wheel near the Eiffel Tower is to be demolished at ' the end of the month and cn up into steel sections for reconstruction work in the devastated .areas. It will furnish. eleven thousand tons of girders and a quantity of scrap.
