THE JUNIOR COMPETIOION. „ HUIAS V. UTIKU. In the local junior competition, the Utiku team won easily against the Huias by 25 points to nil. The game was most uninteresting, but was a good indication of the improved form of tire Utiku players, Mr Angus Fletcher was referee. MATAROA V. PIRATES. This game was much more even than the one which preceded ir, and at half-time there was no score. The Mataroa team played well in the first half, in which they had the advantage of the play; but in the second half they were defending most of the time. The Pirates made the game more open, and were superior to Mala roa during the whole of the second half. Bray scored a try for the Pirates, who won by three points to nil. Mr D. Burrell controlled the game. ’VARSITY MATCH. NEW ZEALAND V. SYDNEY. j % —— CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 6. In the ’Varsity match. New Zealand v. Sydney on Saturday, the score at half-time was: New Zealand, 5; Sydney, 3; and the final score: New Zealand 1 17 Sydney 9 OTAGO V. WANGANUI. DUNEDIN, Sept. 6. In the Rugby match Otago v_ Wanganui on Saturday the score at halftime was: Otago 17, Wanganui 3. The final scores wore: Otago 34, Wanganui 9. AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. In the Raufurly Shield match today Wellington completely outclassed Auckland, winning by 20 points to 3. TAIHAPB V. RANGITIKEI. The Taihape rep. team visited Marton on Saturday, and after a good
game defeated the home team by 18 points to 13. THE AMENDpr|jiULES. CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. £ WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. The conference of chairmen of Rugby Unions throughout the Dominion to discuss the proposed amendments to the rules was held last night. ThePress was excluded from the meeting, but it is understood that the (Opinion, expressed was unanimously in favour of most of the amendments recommended at the conference of New Zealand, Queensland, and New South Wales delegates in Sydney in November last, and of the English Union being notified accordingly. It is stated that the hesitancy over “cutting the painter” from the English Union was much less marked than has hitherto been tbe case in such meetingsin the past, and that, should the decisions of the conference be backed up by the unions represented, the result will be practically the adoption next season of what are known as the Auckland amended rules. It wa» decided to preserve the English rulesagainst professionalism.
