EMBARGO ON POTATOES.
LIFTED TOO LATE. DUXEDIX, August 2s. Xu, the opinion of a leading Dunedin merchant the embargo lifting on potato export to the Commonwealth will come too late. Ho says: ‘‘lf the Australian representative, when he comes across, finds that any of our districts are clean as regards scab, we will probably be allowed to ship, but that permission may not end the difficulty. There must be delays in making the report, and, oven if it is favourable, a lit: Ip time will be taken up in getting ready for shipment. I am afraid it will be the end of September before we can get pd atoes actually on board a ship and by that time some sprouting may have commenced. If that should happen, and it is likely, and the pd’ atoes have to stand in a warm hold for a week or ten days one cannot be sure that they will be in marketoble condition when they arrive. My point, is that it is a question whether re.lT is not coming too late. I hope not, but there is a doubt. One thing quite sure is that there is an ample supply to draw from 'in Canterbury.”
