TOWN HALL PICTURES. “BRINGING UP BETTY.” Bringing up a young woman to walk the way she should go will raise a bald patch on father’s head whether her name be Betty, Maud, Susan, or Yeobel. In the New World film com-edy-drama “Bringing Up Betty” is about as diflicult a business as teaching a Bengal tiger to catch mice. Betty, in the story, has a rich uncle, and has admirers accordingly. Four come into the story, so that should be enough to go on with. Two are dollar hunters pure and simple, Lord Dormer and the Duke of Hedonia, and they are easily disposed of by a rumour that the old man has lost all his money. Then comes along the villian of the piece, who hears from his own fiancee that the rumour is a scare frame-up, and sails in himself to get the girl and the dollars. His fiancee arranges thtU ho shall step on the. banana skin of circumstance and slither out of the picture, by which time Mr Right happens along, a real nice young man, and all ends well. Evelyn Green makes a Betty that is worth the money. THE KING'S JANE EYRE. Under the title of “Woman and Wife/’ Charlotte Brontes world-fam-ous novel “Jane Eyre”’ makes its appearance in film form at the King’s on Wednesday and Thursday, with the celebrated actress Alice Brady in the title role. Well one remembers the fascination and thrill of the novel, how once started it was hard to put down, and, was often read two or three times over. Now those selfsame characters, those well remembered scenes and situations find a place on the magic screen. Crowded houses have attested the popuarity of the film version ,wherever shown, and Taihape is fortunate at receiving such at so early a date.
The Town Hall being engaged, arrangements have been made to show “The Strange Case of Mary Page’’ at the Kings.
