WORKERS' EDUCATION.

Another subject introduced at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce that is not in the ordinary well-worn rut of subjects dealt with, was that mentioned by Mr D. G. Gordon. The "Workers' Educational Institute" is unquestionably serving., a noble purpose. As the trade and finance of the world becomes more complex there arises an increasing necessity that all classes of the community, particularly the workingclasses, should be equipped to gra?p and thorougrly understand them. The Workers' Educational Association formed in Bllgland a dozen or more years ago has performed a great work. The subjects taken in most cases are economics, and industrial and social history. In th'.s way an exceedingly interesting and fruitful form of further education has been developed, and it not snfrequently happens that men who have spent their lives at hard man.tax work with little ov no schooling as ch'ldren, are seen more than holdii:: their own in debates on economic with highly-trained, educated people. It is seen that the majorit/ of young men will be at a great disadvantage in future struggles ?o.' insistence unless- an opportunity is given that all may take to secure .1 higher education after their life's work is commenced. It is with this object and for this purpose the Workers' Educational Association came into existence, and the result of attending lectures and classes held by this Association may be witnessed in inore than one British legislature. Mr Gordon's expressed opinion, that the Chamber of Commerce could assist in jjprming classes in Taihape is very timely and it is hoped that it will be acted upon in every opportunity that is presented.
