o THE SENIOR GAME. HUIA ’S V, PIRATES r . Pirates had the advantage of a slight wind in the first half, and their backs commenced an attack soon after the start, but McAuliffe was stopped by Ongley. The Huia forwards got going and Pirates territory was invaded. Batley took play into the 25, but the ball was kicked out. After a spell of good even play, McLaughlan. scored for Huias, but the try was ' not converted. Play became fast and exciting for several minutes; when Rose sent the ball to McAuliffe, to Cowie, to Dockery, who scored. McAuliffe converted. Pirates 5; Huias 3. From, the line-out, O’Connell got the ball away, and folowed up fast, but McDermott secured and found the line. The ball came to Ongley, who kicked too hard, and Healey found the line. McAucliffc got possession after the line-out. and found the line again. The Huia forwards then rushed the ball into the Pirates’ 25 again, but Cowie kicked to Bennett, who found the line at the corner flag. A scrum and some loose play, followed the line-out, and Whaki got possession in front of the posts and dashed over the line, but no try was allowed. The Pirates were penalised shortly afterwards inside their 25, but Ongley’s kick was a bad one. Beiliss headed another rush, and the Pirates were penalised again within their 25. This time Bennett took the kick, but with no better result than Ongley’s. The Pirates now commenced to attack by fast following up, but the rush was stopped by McDrr-

mott just as the 25 was reached. From some loose play following a scrum lu teidfield, Sullivan tried to break away, but was well stopped by Pose. Bellirs picked up smartly and made a the line, but wag stopped by C&l,?, the ball going out. From the line-out play was transferred to half-way, ;u.d then to the Pirates’ ,25 by Ungioy. McDermott ran in and prevented McAuliffc from marking the ball going to Tuke, who kicked high and followed: up with Batley. The Huias attacked again after the kick out, but the Pirates were defending splendidly right jthrough. From a line-out in the 25., Rose secured the ball and kicked highthe Pirates following up fast. Play was= in mid-field for some time till Beilis*kicked high and ran up with Rogers*; who tackled Cowie just as the latter took a good mark. The Pirates started a loose rush by folowing up a kick by Healey, and took play into the Huias’ 25 for the second, time in thesecond half. From a line-out in the 25 close play folowed, and from a sehum Ongley secured the ball and kicked low. The Huias were penalised, for off-side play in their 25, and Cowie had a shot at goal, but missed, the ball faling short. Bennett took the ball from the drop-out. and failed to find the hue, and play was centred, MeAuliffe got, possession and put in a tricky run, but was collared eventually, and Bennett sent the ball out again. Play was transferred - to the Pirates ’ 25, where Whald picked np from a loose scramble, but dropped the ball, which was secured by Cowie, who found the line. Just after the line-out Batley came along in great style with the ball at his feet, but over-ran the ball when in a good position. The ball went out, and rue lineout* was followed by a scrum in the 25, and another line-out and scrum followed. The ball came to MeAuliffe, who passed to Collier after a good run. Prom the line-out the ball was sent to Ongley, who found the line. The Pirates were again penalised in their 25, and Ongley made another .unsuccessful attempt to kick a goal. From a scrum a little later, Sinclair passed out to Kose. who was well collared by McDermott before ho could get the ball away. Beiliss camo through with the ball at his too, but Whaki came in at the-wrong time and his side was penalised. The ball was returned quickly after the drop-out, and went over the line, the Pirates forcing again. Beiliss got going <1I1( 1 looked dangerous when he over-ran the ball. get going with a forward rusk started by McLaughlan, but Sinclair saved a possible try by marking. The play went and the Hulas tried to force way through again. They were mining good progress, when "Cowie marked and found the line. The game ended with the score: Pirates 11, Huias 9. Mr, D. Burrell controlled the gameThe contest was keenly fought out, and there was great excitement among the spectators. The defensive work of the Pirates was perefe't, but they were very lucky to win the game. The Huias really lost the game on account of bad kicking, as they had numerous opportunities to score penalty goals and missed. The Piiates were not the best team on the day’s play, as! the Huias were doing all the attacking in the second half, and it was sheer bad luck combined with bad kicking which lost them : the game. Probably, when the teams meet again, the Huias will win by the ,fair margin they should have won by on Saturday.

THE JUNIOR COMPETITION. The game between the Huias and Pirates Juniors was played as a cur-tain-raiser tt> rEe senior game, and provided an interesting game. The sides were not very -well matched, and the final result yas as follows: Pirates 27, Huias 3.
