SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 1920. TAIHAPE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
With Which is incorporated "The Taihape Post and Waimarino "News "
The annual general meeting of members <of the Taihape Chamber of j Commerce., presents an occasion for | congratulating members and Council upon the very great measure of success achieved during the year just ended. "The balance-sheet clearly indicates -chat the business department has been wellmanaged, a satisfactory cash balance being -available for commencing the work of another year. It is not much, but it is rarely that institutions of the kind in provincial towns, 'find it possible to make ends meet. 'We truly hope we are doing members no injustice in saying that it seems that, from their attendance at discussions, they do not estimate the work of the Chamber at its true value; and those who should be vitally interested, and who have not yet become members, are scarcely acting fairly in allowing those who are members to fight the battles, of the district without their help and collaboration. It is true that membership of the Executive, or Council, of an active Chamber of Commerce demands all the time most businessmen can afford to devote to it. Present members of the Executive have had very'important issues under their con- j siderafion, and it can truly be said they have been notably successful. The persistence with which the Tai-hape-Napier road subject has been kept alive is an instance of -The good work the Chamber can do in dealing with the greater, more comprehensive problems, that need solving in Taihape's favour. We are of opinion the very highest ultimate has been obtained i n that one case, and no citizen can estimate the value of the roading and bridging to make a highway between Napier and Taihape that is to be proceeded with as soon as weather permits. We do not hesitate -to say that the advantages of this town's business will continue to increase for long into the future; such advantages are incalculable, inestimable at the present time. Old Colonists have seen backward towns speed on ahead of others better situated, because a virile, far-seeing, business citizenship was determined that their town should not be amongst those I which must, almost of necessity, stagnate. Taihape. people are the architects of their own future and the future of their town and district, and if future Chambers of Commerce do no more than tlje present lias done, ••there need be no fear as to what that future will be; it will be worth all the time that can be devoted to it. The annual meeting of members is to take place on Monday evening, and it is hoped there will be a large, in terested gathering to hear the retiring Council give an account of its stew- ! ardship.
