GOVERNMENT LOANS. THE RATE OF INTEREST. WELLINGTON, August 17. • ‘lt has been said that we have little prospect of raising Idans at 5 per cent, free from income-tax,” said the Prime Minister in the House of Represents fives to-night. “Let me tell the hon. gentleman that since the House met we have raised some hundreds of thousands of pounds from outside at 5 per cent, without any freedom from income-tax.” . Hr. Massey said"that it was the intention of the Government to move to increase the maximum rate of interest when the Loan Bill came down. It is understood that Mr. Massey hopes to raise - his loan in November at 51 per cent, without exemption from income-tax. 1 NEW RAILWAY TARIFF. i OPERATES ON MONDAY. WELLINGTON, August 18. The revised railway tariff designed to increse revenue by £750,000 was again before Cabinet to-day, but was referred back to the , Department for further consideration of Cabinet’s suggestions. Delay will not prevent operation of the new rates on Monday. CONGESTED WOOL STORES. WELLINGTON, August 18. The Premier attended a meeting oh the Council of Agriculture to-day to explain communications -from the Imperial authorities regarding the wool clip for the coming season. I understand that .a recent * important cable dealt with the congestion of stores in England, and a proposal to relieve the position by storage, in New Zealand.
COMPENSATING NURSE HYMEN. HAMILTON. August 18. At a meeting of the Waika‘o Nurserymen’s Council, held last evening, it was decided to support the suggestion to appoint a Dominion organiser. The council decided to pHace on record “its pleasure at learnifig that the Minister is considering favourably a measure for compensating nurserymen for their losses occasioned by the quarantining of nurseries, and respectfully urges that the sum be a liberal one.”
