The Women Teachers' Association in the Wellington Education .Board district recently protested against the introduction of tooth-brush drill among smaller children. The Education Department has now agreed that medical and dental officers shall *meet representatives of the Association to discuss the matter. The Education Bc/ard, while admitting certain, 'difficulties, hopes that teachers wilß. encourage the proper care of the teeth.
A recent English, paper stated that, owing to the relaxed vigilance of the police, cock-fighting has recently been revived in Ireland. At Boresdown, West Meath,, recently a "battle" was fought between cocks owned by representatives of North and South Ireland. Thirteen fights were he>ld, the result being declared a draw. Over 2000 spectators were present, and many motor-cars were drawn up beside the scene of the encounter.
The Secretary of the Ohakune Chamber of Commerce, lias received the following communication from the Commissioner of Crown Lands: —"Keferring to your letter of the 12th ult., I have to inform you that I am not aware of any Crown Land in the vicinity of Ohakune that could be used as a ajte for an* experimental farm. If however, the Department of Agriculture decides to "establish, the Experimental Farm at Ohakune, the question of finding a suitable area for the purpose, will receive attention."
Members of the gang of thieves who. have been operating in Sydney for a long time, paying attention generally to the best, of disposable goods, visited the factory of Sidney Snow, Ltd.. late on the night of August 3rd or easily next morning, and took materials worth about £SOO. (The. factory is opposite the Central: Police Station. The thieves first forced an entrance to a building adjoining it. from which it was ortiy a matter of leaning a little distance to smash one of the windows on the third floor, on which the articles were stocked. These included madapolam, crepe, silk, satin, drill, sateen, and flannelette. Such goods are not very bulky. They could, have been taken away in ,a few bags.

The many friends of Mr. Walter Knox will regret to hear of his death which occurred at the Taihape Hospital yesterday afternoon .after an illness of several days. Mr. Knox was 63 years of age, and wjas probably better known as Mr. Walter Smart. He came to Taihape about six years ago, (and worked for a long time as. a bricklayer with his stepson, Mr. Jno. Smart. The deceased gentleman was highly esteemed on account of his many sterling qualities, and the sympathy of a large circle of friends: witl be extended to the widow and family in their sad bereavement.
