ACT OF BRAVERY.
MINER'S RESCUE OF HIS MATEO I An act of great bravery is reported, from Murray Creek Coal Mine, near Reefton. it appears that; a miner named Warren, one of two working in No. 4 level, was left to ignite the fuses of three charges. Owing to some delay in attending to the second and third, the first charge exploded before he could gain a point of safety, injuring him in the back and both legs. The force of the .■ explosion put cut the candles, and the other miner. Eckluud, in the darkness above hoard Warren moan, and without the slightest hesitation, Ecklund went down to the assistance of his injured mate. Disregarding the awful fact that the other two" shots were due to explode at any moment, he got. to the bottom and, seizing the injured man by the shoulders, lifted . him bodily up twenty feet of ladders to (.he floor of the level above. He had scarcely accomplished this feat when the other two shots went off. This ordeal over, Ecklund proceee&d to further assist his_ injured male. It was of no use calling for assistance, as no one but himself and his mate worked in this portion of the mine. Leaving the injured ma n ,Ecklund travelled five hundred feet . for an empty truck. Returning with the truck, he lifted the injured man. into it. and then pushed his impromptu ambulance a distance of eight hundred feet to 'the shaft, and here, again, without, assistance, he put the injured . man in the cage and took him to the surface. Ecklund's acfion is to be brought to the notice of the Royal Humane Society.
