LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The recent severe frosts have been responsible for a number of burst water pipes in the town. Mr P. W. Stringer is severing his long connection with the Rangitikei Sawmillers’ Association, and will shortly be leaving for Australia. Mr P. S. Carroll, managing secretary of the Otaihape Meat Company has tendered his resignation, and will shortly be relinquishing his position. Canada is becoming a great woolproducing country. This year the clipping of the sheep in the province of Alberta alone will yield 15,000,0001 b of wool—more than twice as much as 10 years ago. The Taihape Soldiers’ Memorial Committee are inviting applications for the position of secretary at a remuneration of £4 per week and 2\ per cent, commission on all money collected for the memorial. The following vessels will be within wireless range on July 28, 1920: With Wellington:— Pateena, Wahine, Port Denison, Maori, Port Alma, Argyllshire, Paparoa, Kurow. With Awa-rua:—-Westmeath, Paloona, Tutanekai. Important disclosures are expected uow that Admiral Fisher has passed away, as he recently said that after his death he could not be sued for libel, nor his pension confiscated by the Government, and his private papers, would be published. The next dance under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, August 11th. There will be no dance this week on account of the Town Hall having been engaged by a visiting company.
The whitebait season has commenced unusually early this season, and supplies have been on sale in Auckland for about a fortnight past (says the New Zealand,, Herald). Most of tine consignments are coming from the Lswer Waikato. The season usually begins in August.
About three weeks ago attention was drawn to the dearth of biscuits on the local market, it being noted that the stocks of some grocers were completely denuded. Since the price of sugar has' advanced by 109 per cent there are biscuits for all —at a higher price!—Dominion.
Tenders are invited by the Department of Labour for the erection of dwellings under the Workers’ Dwellings Act at a number of towns. The total number of houses for which tenders are invited is 266. and nine cf these have been allotted to Taihape. Particulars are advertised in this issue. The following forecast was issued to-day:—The indications are for variable and moderate breezes, southeasterly moderate prevailing. There is a prospect of fair weather, foggy at time's. There will probably be a hard frost to-night. Barometer little movement.
Like the thrifty housekeeper, the retail shopman has been forced through a shortage in some lines that were obtainable in good supply in prewar days to adopt economic methods to meet, the changed conditions. The latest ease to come to light is that of an Auckland suburban baker, who requires customers to bring along their own paper.. The customers have, perforce, accustomed themselves to this provision, and it is now no uncommon sight to see them waiting in the shop with the necesShry coverings for their requirements.— Auckland Star.
