MEAT LICENSE WANTED.
ARMOUR AND COMPANY. W ISLINGTON, July 21. A request that a license • should be issued to Ann our and Company, Ltd., of Australasia, is contained in a petition presented tu Parliament to-day by .Mr D. Jones (Kai-apoi), and signed by H. D. Acland and 107 others. The statement sets forth that the petitioners, who are sheep farmers, bei:eve u to i>e to the interests of the meat producers of the Dominion that no unnecessary restriction should 1)6 placed cn Hie sale of meat, and that competition among buyers from abroad is to the advantage of the country. They suggest that the license to the company, previously refused under the provisions of the Slaughtering and Inspection of Stock Act, ID IS, should be granted. They believe it to be to the advantage of their industry that the company should be permitted to purchase a fair proportion of produce in open competition. The license■ could be revoked if necessary the moment that it was shown that its operations' were conducted in such a way as to bo detrimental to the good of the producers of the Dominion. They suggest. further, that all ,'meat-buying firms should be compelled to send to the Department of Agriculture monthly reports showing the numbers and class of stock bought, where frozen and stored, and all other information deemed advisable. If from these it appear, •pel that the operations of any of them suggested a danger to the interests of fhe producers, the license issued that firm could be cancelled upon the powers already conferred by the Act.
