GIRLS IN MEN’S JOBS.
KIOTO US PROTEST IN 'BRISTOL.
There were riotous scenes in Bristol in. connection with the agitation of 0000 ex-service men against the employment of women on the tramways. For many hours the service was suspended owing to the wrecking tactics of the wilder element among the men, and eventually the local police, reinforced 'by drafts from Cardiff and Newport’, made a baton charge in the principal square. The ex-stTrvice men paraded the main streets of the city, entered offices and banks, and demanded that all girls should be discharged in favour of soldiers at eight days’ notice. The girl conductors had a trying time. They were subjected to jeers, threats and insults, and there were some attempts to remove them from the platforms of the cars. The police were in strong force and intervened. Gravel, sand and sawdust were thrown at the girls. The girls contended that there was no more reason why they should be discharged to make room for men than that a similad policy should be adopted in the factories and Gilsewhere. Ultimately the tramway' company conceded the claim of the unemployed ex-service men, and immediate steps will be taken to replace the girl conductors by men.
