CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Council -of the Taihape Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, at which there was only a moderate attendance. After the usual routine business, Mr E. A. Davies moved that This Council views with regret the surprising lack of interest shown in the Chamber by members generally, and that it feels that if the Chamber is to continue its good work for the district some greater support must be given to it. It was pointed out that the attendance at quarterly meetings of members might be very much better and would be if members would only realise what Their attendance Icontributed to the success of the work the Chamber has in hand. The resolution was then carried nem cou.

It was reported that a deputation had been arranged by the Eangitikei County Council and other local bodies interested, to meet the Minister of Public Works in connection with the metalling of the Taihape to Napier main roads and the necessary bridging of the Eangitikei River, more especially with reference tc matters of finance. The secretary" was instructed to get into touch with the Eailway Department with a view to urging that the fcotbridge across the line at the railway station be extended right across '■ho r;iilw:i3' premises instead of pedestrians having to alight near the goods shed. It was remarked that minor accidents had occurred and that the danger of worse misfortunes was everpresent. It was particularly irksome to passengers who had to cross the line with their luggage ok their way to the hospital and the Terrace, in having to go down into the railway yard and then climbing the bank on the other side. It was thought that the General Manager would realise the danger and inconvenience and would consent to the extension of the bridge if his

attention were drawn to it. Residents also drew the Chamber's attention to the open nature of the protection to the footbridges alongside the traffic bridges from the eastern to the western town. It was thought that children could be rendered safe from falling through on to the line if strong netwire was securely fastened on either side. It was decided that the secretary also draw the Department's attention to the footbridges in that connection.

A resolution was adopted instructing the secretary to communicate with the chairman of the Cemetery Board with a view to ascertaining whether the Board was in a position to effect some improvement to the cemetery footpaths and the general -surroundings.

It was mentioned that the annual meeting of members would take' place on the 15th August, and the hope was expressed that business men and settlers would attend and thereby give that support to the Chamber that its possibilities fully merit. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
