ENGLISH BOOT TRADE.
LARGE STOCKS AND SLOW’ "" SALES
The report on business conditions in England during April, published by Lloyds Bank, contains the following from the Leicester agent of the bank:——“A good demand is experienced fpr superior and medium footwear, but the production is 011 a large scale and stocks are considerable. The production is far in advance of the demand for home consumption, and both manufacturers and factories are loaded with stocks, and orders are coming in very slowly. Although etiforts have been made to develop the export trade, the high prices of raw material and the state of the exchanges have prevented this expansion. “Then conditions assume a more normal aspect, it is confidently expected tlla.‘fi the export branch of this industmé will greatly increase in volume.’ ’
The bank also reports dull business in Manchester cotton goods, ‘and a falling off in orders for Nottinghaxn lace goods.
