WANGANUI BEATEN BY 3' TO 5.
. A Wanganui team visited Maftlon - on Wednesday to play Rangitikei, and psuflfered defeat by"'S pointsto 5. ‘ The Wvanganui side was not so strong. as it wouldnhave been had Ross, Boswell, Danielson, and Scott been available, and it ~.'{'as anticipated that the ‘game _Would be :1 very even one. Sb -‘it proved, being well contested t_;lJ1?Ougl1out, though if anything Rangitiliei hada shade rho best of it, and deserved their win. The we2itli€r'was fine, and there was a very large Effendance of spectators. The ground was very ‘heavy: but.,.the play particularly so at tinies, and the §pe‘Cst:ltors were provided with occasional thrills. THE PLAY. Rangitikei kicked off, and from the efirsf. scrum Hiroti sent out to Palmer to Sullivan, who showed that he understood the five-eight game by cutting in splendidly and passing out well, but ‘the attaél: failed. Quirke failed to ’get. the line With :3. kick, and allowed the green backs to get under way, L. Green piitting in a big kick, and Stewart, Pratt, Pa_\.'ne, and Hartley taking part ‘in a fine passlng run; Hartley was tackled by Palmer when clpse to the touch line and a few yards from , the -goal line. H'é"Fhl-ow the ball in to Payne, who raccd‘o'i"e‘l' near the corner, , but the pretty bit of play went for naught, as the line umpire’s flag was up. A Wanganui rush to half-way followed, and then the blues got on some passing rusiTé's, Palmer being smothered on one occasion; and Sfrachan failing to take 3. pass on another, the latter losing :3. great cbace to‘ score. L. Green’s fine line kicking saved Ran-
gitikei several times, and was instrumental in putting Wanganui on the
defece more than once, Packer's pace saving the situation. Rangitfikci were given’ a free, and Stewart made 21 good attempt at goal, but missed. Wanganui took play ~to mid-fie,ld with a forward rush, and then their ‘backs indulged in some paSsTngT which ended at the green 25 lfné.“ Herc Sul~ livan made a. splendid opening and sent the ball out to Packex-,_who took itzon the bounce and gallopecl straight ahead and over the line in fillr;".s:tylc._ Ala.baster converted. ' . . . 3Ya"san,ui +""l‘:a'ugitikel At it again, Svenson and Sullivan ‘put in some pretty clo§‘e‘-passing, but _a throw fSol'wVal'd pulfled them up after Strach-an had joined in. Some un-
eventful play followetluntil Stewart secured, drew the opposition. and then cut in splendidly, made a fiJfo":.ln, and then passed fo Pratt, who was grassedby Packer. The greens kept, up the attack, and Paranihi had an unsuccess-
ful shot from 3. free. A fine bit of play by Pmtt followed, and had he "been well supported, R-angitikei must have Sr-.oreG. Hiroti, Sullivan, and Svenson were instrument:ll in drawing ‘the grc-ens.back to neutral territory as half-time sounded, ' SECOND lIXTTTF. _
The second half opened with :1 Wanganui rush headed by Wilson. who kickedviu-field instead of pa:~:siug out to Packer, who might have scored. Palmer, Svenson, and Sullivan took part in a neat bit. of passing, which was stopped near the line. At. this "stage Stewgu-t, (Rangitikei) had to go’ off owing"'to I'eceiving :1 kick in the ba.r:l~:, ';\!<:Dowell' taliirlg his place‘-. Connop and .. Haynes was fee(ling_his‘lSupports well, , ¢*andlPar2ulilii, Blair, and Pratt; ‘were conspicuous in some good.'p:rssing, the last named ‘being nearly over once. Raugitikei kept up the pressure, ancl Blair puntod high, followed ‘up fast, seoured, and dashed over the line only ‘to lose the bzill, which Cameron, however, pounced upon and scored a. try. Pa_mnih'l’s shot went astray. Rangitikei 8
Wunganui Resuming, Pziranihi made a good effort at goal from 3, mark from nearly half-way. Passing rushes by Rangitikei kept Wang:mui' busy, until Lockett, Barfnrd, and Duggan can-ied play intothe green’s half. Here Smflliv-an and Svonson got in some spl_endid- Wo“k, ~zepeatedly earning apphiuse for their
clever .swe_rviug, _passillg,_zlud repuas; ‘mg. One of these bouts ended in Sullivan giving the ball to Strachan, who darted over the line, but the referee -.-un;~d that Straehan was in front; when he took the pass. A large number of speCt:ltol‘s showed that the decision did not meet with their approval by vigorous_ hooting. However,‘ eal'liel' in the game Rangitikei had lost xvlmt looked like :1 fair try,
I Re-suming, Quirke failed to pick up the bull, and this changed :1. \Vang:l- - attack into defence. as Haynes, Pratt, and Paranihi got away with :1 11cz1E passing ruslx, the last named player gthoring in the ball in :1 miraculous manner, but he was grassed. Again, Paranihi got. going, and >.‘.€nt on to Pratt to Payne, who was well grassed by Strachanf ‘ ~
The chief feature of the last few minutes’ play was some clever Work by Svonson and Sullivan, but Rang"ltikci stalled off the .atta‘cks, and the gamé endéd with the scores:—
