ASSESSI\IENT OF DUTY.
VVELLINGTON, July 5.
With reference to the decision of Cabinet thuf. imported goods invoiced in i"ol'eign currency shall be assessed for duty according to either the par rate of exchange or the commercial mm; whichever afi’ol'<is relief to the importer, at the discrefion of the Mini.~‘t(‘l‘, the position (as classified by the sool'otar_v of the Wellington Chamber of Cormnerce at a meeting of ‘the Council) is that the Customs Department has decided that in the case of imports from France, Belgium and Italy, the conversion rate ‘of such invoices for Customs purposes shall be practically the current rate charged by banks. So far as imports from the United States are concerned, dollars will be converted into sterling at the parity value of the doliar, i.e., 4.86.
